Wellness in the Workplace

As employers, it is important to foster the concept of life wellness. It has so many advantages in terms of improving attendance in the workplace and reducing illnesses and promoting a sense of well being in your employee’s lives.

Basically, happier employees are more content employees and being happier and more content leads to fewer illnesses. Also, people who are satisfied at their workplace tend to take less time from work and ultimately this leads to cost savings and improved profits. The less time an individual is away from work, the less disruption there is in the workplace and the more efficient the organization is. People lose sight of the impact that absenteeism has on the workplace. Normal work just doesn’t get done when it should, the flow is interrupted and in turn the quality of the work suffers.
Therefore, we have to strive for happier employees who live better lives, enjoy life more and enjoy their workplace more. It’s just good business to make this a vital part of the employer – employee relationship. Here are some key points to consider in improving this relationship:

• Encourage employees to eat breakfast and eat properly in general.

• Promote a healthy diet by posting brochures in the workplace about food choices.

• Recommend physical activity and give suggestions as to leisure activities.

• Post BMI (Body Mass Index) charts. Ratio of weight to height.

• Ensure that drinking water is available to your employees. Water is so important.

• Point out where they can eat healthy close to the business.

• Warn about fad dieting and point out foods high in fat content.

• Promote the concept of taking vitamins to supplement diet.

• Post nutritional information on vending machines about the contents.

• Post information on recommended fruit and vegetable portions daily.

• Information should be posted about stress management.

• Be family friendly. Promote family togetherness.

• Provide educational opportunities to your employees.

• Promote vacations from work. Vacations need to be vacations.

• Relationships away from the office are so important. Provide guidance.

• Provide information on day care services. Make it easy for them to find it.

• Information on how to resolve conflicts. People need help.

• General guidance on responsible drinking and other habits that can impact them.

• Financial wellness programs. Help to plan and other provide assistance.

• General food safety issues at home and the workplace.

• Consider all issues a typical family has to deal with and help with direction.

• Foster a friendly work environment. Promote camaraderie amongst your employees.

We could go on and on but I’m sure you get the message. Basically, make it as easy as you can to assist your employees to live better and healthier lives. Think of the ways that you, their employer, can help. It will pay dividends and it may surprise you as to how much the employees enjoy working in your organization.
